I’m stuck, and its pretty fucking annoying. I staerted my job on Monday and my wife has been driving me to work. It also requires us dragging the kids out. I need a new car but i’m a pretty stubborn ass when it comes to cars. The WRX spoiled me. I feel like if I’m not driving something as fast as the WRX its just not going to satisfy me. I decided to go in the oppposite direction and look at an 87 Land Cruiser but that one was a hunk of shit and wasn;t going to work. I dont know what to do. My leading perspective is a late 90’s Wrangler. I dunno if I’m a jeep guy. No way do I want FWD. The less I spend on this vehicle the more I can spend on something that finally suits my desires. What should I get? It still need to be fairly presentable for if I ever need to go meet anyone fro my office.

south of Boston (02339), $8k if its awesome, no more than that. NEEDS to be reliable

Get another WRX. OOOOORRRRRR A WIIIILDDDD CARRRDDDDD. The B7 A4s were pretty damn reliable. Family member of mine has had one for 60,000 miles without a single issue.

slap on a set of snow tires and it will.

you have the engine over the drive wheels remember? not like a RWD where there is nothing pushing the drive tires into the ground.

Can’t be FWD?

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/ctd/535136…

There was a manual IS300 in southern NH I was looking at, but it’s been sold.

Alternatively,

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/cto/535284…

I’d buy that if I had room for a second car.

If only you were looking for another WRX two weeks ago, but mine’s gone now.

2.0t cars didn’t have a timing chain. Very reliable cars, fun to drive and lots of aftermarket potential. Recommended interval for the T-Belt was 75k.

What Peter said. Get a cheap, reliable FWD car and put snow tires on it. If you can’t make it through to your drive-way with a car so equipped, you shouldn’t be out anyway. I have had several FWD cars, and they all handled snow pretty well with the right tires. I just bought some rims from a Contour for the Focus, and if it starts snowing, snow tires will be purchased and installed ASAP.

Toyota Matrix XRS. It sounds like this car is fast as ****. It really isn’t. It’s loud. If you sit in the back, your ears are drowned by the drone of the exhaust. It has 6 gears and FWD.

Infiniti G35. The car is pretty fast, pulls hard, and it’s Infiniti leather.

MazdaSpeed something.

Cheap beater RWD car. For $8k you could probably get something fairly modern, too, like made in the last decade and likely quite reliable. 2008-ish Cadillac? Should have decent power, RWD, and be in this price range. An E-class might be a possibility if you are willing to hunt enough.

The problem is that there aren’t many cheap RWD cars and those that exist don’t tend to be very good.

My 2002 P71 cost as much as a nice mattress and has been fairly reliable for a couple years, including winters living in Erie, PA which involved pushing snow with the bumper (good snow tires and the LSD are key)

G35x? I may be a bit biased since I own one but older models are pretty cheap now. I don’t know how it is in Boston but nearly every time I see another G sedan on the road it’s on the highway and piloted by an older lady.

I’m at almost 200k km on mine. Engine’s never given any trouble. Control arm had to be replaced but other than that she’s been quite reliable for the last 6 years she’s been mine. Also AWD.

It’s an el nino year, so expect it to be warmer and milder than normal, regardless of what global warming does.

Also, I’ve never owned an AWD car or snow tires, and it’s really not that bad. I’ve never not made it to where I wanted to go, and sometimes those places are somewhat off the paved roads. One time in particular a friend in his Imprezza and I were going camping, I can’t really say the AWD helped him much. We both made it after several tries and making tracks. Some of those tries needed a 70 mph wheelspeed with a 5mph ground speed, but we made it. If you can’t make it out of your driveway, you’re just not trying hard enough.

Hmm I dunno if 8K could get you into a nice enough B7 for it to be reliable. These cars are very sensitive to maintenance. Mine’s been very reliable, but only after an incredibly expensive initial break in period after the previous owner neglected it, during which many things failed.

Plus routine maintenance is pretty expensive if you do it right. I’m looking at a pretty hefty bill for refreshing mine’s suspension soon.

That said, thanks to the big aftermarket, it is possible to keep a B7 going for cheap, it just isn’t pretty. For the money, it will get you through snow with decent comfort, speed, and fuel economy until you run it into the ground. And B7s are aging very gracefully, IMO.

All Audis age pretty damn good.

Maintenance is important though, as you said. A family member of mine has owned one since 20k or something like that. The only problem covered under CPO warranty was for excessive oil consumption, then after that it was smooth sailing. Always went to the dealer for brakes and such. She’s trading it for a brand new Allroad at some point.

I agree....FWD is fine, not “petrolhead-y”, no, but it can still be fun and is perfectly fine in the winter. I can’t get my DD back our road sometimes in the winter after storms (2009 Hyundai Accent), but that’s because the Dept. of Transport sucks at plowing our subdivision. Otherwise, I’ve never had a problem getting anywhere.

Get a fullsize GM. The 350 is basically the engine equivalent of Legos, and they’re good at truck stuff like off-roading and hauling. I picked up a really nice ‘97 Tahoe for like 3 or 4 grand.

Honestly not that much even if you don’t do it your self. Things to look out for on older mercs are that the ignition system is in check and the ovp/fuel relay is good. Either than that they are very simple, reliable cars. Bmw are prone to have cooling problems, but as soon as you get that overhauled, they are trouble free. Vanos though is a bitch.

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/533971…

http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/cto/531903… <—AWD

All seem to be in very nice condition, based on photos. I put the price cap at $7500, all are under that by a fair margin. Clean, presentable, executive-style, but if you opt for a GS400 instead, you get more vrooms. RWD standard, AWD optional. Lexus = Toyota = reliable-ish.

If you want reliable, stop looking at Wranglers, man.
